Energy efficient transportation in combination with maintaining traffic safety standards places new demands on future traffic systems. Zero emission vehicles will, for technical reasons (e.g. battery technology), need to be considerably lighter than present day vehicles. Furthermore, from a raw materials perspective it is a more economical use of resources to reduce the size of cars, however, in turn this means that safety needs to be improved as the light new vehicles have to co-exist with large trucks on the road network. The development of active safety systems at testing facilities such as AstaZero is consequently a prerequisite to enable the introduction of both electrified roads and small and light zero-emission vehicles whilst maintaining safety.
Another interesting aspect is that active safety is a prerequisite for the introduction of vehicle trains/columns, where vehicles in favourable positions in the line can save up to half their fuel consumption during a journey.
